Impacts of urbanization on mangrove forests and brachyuran crabs in Penang, Malaysia

چکیده
Abstract Urban development is driving the loss and subsequent fragmentation of mangrove forests in Penang, Malaysia. However, little research has focused on implications urbanization onto biodiversity within forests. This study investigates compares both vegetation crab assemblages between urban rural Collectively, 5853 trees were recorded including 15 species from six families: Acanthaceae, Arecaceae, Lythraceae, Malvaceae, Meliaceae, Rhizophoraceae. Avicennia marina accounted for 88.6% all held highest importance (IV). Although total number tree varied significantly (14) (7) forests, forest structure based IV did not vary significantly. In total, 633 crabs comprising 13 different three superfamilies: Grapsoidea, Ocypodoidea, Paguroidea. Crab richness sites, but biomasses five densities four Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that land use, salinity, abundance officinalis can best describe distribution (r 2 =32.7). indicates smaller fragmented mangroves at east coast Penang have a relatively high diversity are worth protecting, addition to larger west coast. The preservation small yet interconnected sites could be critical recruitment their flora fauna should considered decision-making processes.

Baseline ecological studies of Pondicherry mangroves are important for monitoring, management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems. A brachyuran crab faunal assemblage at four stations of Pondicherry mangroves is described and monthly samplings were made during September 2008 – August 2009. Totally 22 species of brachyuran crabs belonging to 12 genera and 5 families were recorded crabs bel...

Sesarmid crabs are possibly one of the most important components of mangrove fauna because of their influence on nutrient cycling and forest structure by feeding on litterfall. Little is known about the influence of electivity on the role of crabs in mangrove forests, and how this is affected by the availability of litter items. this study investigated electivity of three northern australian se...

متن کاملDistribution of seaweeds in Mangrove forests
Many of the mangrove forests are characterized by macroalgae growing epiphytically on pneumatophores, prop roots, stems and other hard substrates. Mangrove macroalgae have an important role as primary producers in the estuarine ecosystem. In the present study, four different mangrove habitats were selected to identify the macroalgae inhabiting the roots of a mangrove species Avicennia marina in...
متن کاملAntimicrobial lipids from the hemolymph of brachyuran crabs.
The potential of marine crabs as a source of biologically active products is largely unexplored. In the present study, antimicrobial activity of the hemolymph (plasma) and hemocytes (plasma cells) of six brachyuran crabs was investigated against 16 pathogenic strains. Among the 16 strains tested maximum zone of inhibition was recorded in the hemolymph of Hyas araneus against Shigella flexineri....
